Recent research by Tessi Loeffelmann, Christophe Snoeck, and Philippe Claeys from the BB-Lab, with colleagues from the UK, has shown that Vikings brought animals with them to England as early as the 9th century AD. This conclusion was based on strontium isotope analysis of cremated human and animal remains at the only known Viking cremation cemetery in the British Isles – Heath Wood in Derbyshire. The site is associated with the movements of the Viking Great Army which landed in England in AD 865 and is known to have overwintered near Heath Wood in AD 873-874.
The research has been published in the journal PLoS ONE.
